Make sure the Headlights are working Properly

by | Jul 21, 2014 | Auto Repair, Headlights and Tail Lights, Night Driving, Road Trips, Safe Driving Tips

The headlights are an important part for your vehicle to your safety. Headlights serve the purpose of illuminating the road ahead to provide visibility for you. It also helps to make you visible to others around you. Good headlights can help reduce the chance of an accident and allow you to see what is on the road ahead. This is beneficial if you are driving at night or if it is storming out. You can also bring the vehicle in and we can inspect the headlights for you.

Headlights can vary in type

car-maintenance-1Since the invention of vehicles, headlights have been through numerous designs in order to improve their efficiency and safety for drivers. The most common type of headlight today uses incandescent light bulbs. These type of bulbs work like ones in average house lamps, but are very much more powerful. The filament used in these bulbs evaporates over time and burn out just like any bulb does, leading for replacement every so often. With newer technology, the halogen bulb is starting to emerge in newer vehicle makes and models. These bulbs are similar to traditional incandescent bulbs in that they both require a tungsten filament. However, the halogen bulb uses a thinner filament that offers a brighter white light and the bulb is filled with halogen gas that extends the life of the filament.

The importance of Fog Lights

The fog lights are designed and aimed low at the road to maximize visibility in fog, rain or snowy conditions. Since fog lights are angled toward the road at an angle, the light is thrown across the road in front of you and not straight ahead of you where it can be reflected back. Fog lights provide you with more visibility while driving and reduce the glare on a foggy road. Fog lights only light up a small section of the road and they do not give other drivers enough of a warning sign that your vehicle is approaching.

How to keep the Headlights clean

Headlight maintenance is important for the safety when you drive. Start by checking the lenses for any fogginess or yellowing. Headlights will become cloudy overtime and diffuse the beams of your headlights. This impairs your visibility and makes it difficult for other cars to spot you. Headlights will naturally dim over time. Also make sure you inspect how the headlights are positioned. The beam should be aimed straight ahead. Make sure that when they are on, you are able to see the road in front of you and they are not positioned in any angle or corner. When replacing your headlights it is best to replace them in pairs, that way one of your headlights isn’t bright and the other is dim. This is not only again for safety, but also for maximum illumination on the road. Your headlights are important and should not be overlooked when doing a routine vehicle inspection. You can also bring the vehicle in and we can inspect the lights for you. This can help increase the safety when you drive.
